LED Traffic Lights

Current Fairfield figures

 13 signaled intersections

 470 traffic lights/bulbs at 69-150 watts each

Bulbs replaced 1-2 times per year

Lens over bulb gets burned and must be replaced every 1-2 years

Upgrade to LED lights, or Light Emitting Diodes

 LED replacements use 5-19 watts

 Bulbs replaced every 6-10 years

 Lenses never burn

LEDs are brighter than incandescent bulbs

Why switch?

Total savings is nearly $18,000 per year.

Less work for public works - $6,500 savings per year in labor and materials

 Lights are brighter

 Less energy

$11,164.94 in energy savings per year

85%, or 129,082 kWh reduction in energy use per year

= taking 18.4 cars off the road

= saving 11,391 gallons of gas (or $40,882 worth at $3.59/gallon)

= taking 13.3 houses off the electric grid*

Alliant program:

Alliant pays for materials and labor for replacing all traffic lights

All work to be completed in one night

City of Fairfield pays for new lamps through energy savings over 4 years

Alliant to cease giving incentives next year - we got in under the wire
