About the artist:
Barry Ross grew up in New York City, studied art at the High School of Music and Art, and then continued his studies at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, where he earned a degree in Graphic Arts and Illustration in 1959. He and his wife Kate have been Fairfield residents since 1995.
Specializing in sports and technical illustration, his work has appeared in such magazines as Sports Illustrated, Running Times, Outdoor Life, and Scientific American. For the last 25 years he has been the contributing illustrator for Golf Magazine, illustrating the monthly instruction section Private Lessons. His work also appears in Flying Magazine each month.
In addition to magazine illustration he has done four books on golf, and has completed a large body of work interpreting technology for such corporate clients as Allied Technologies, Martin Marietta, Bendix Aerospace, Mobil Coporaton and Texaco.
Locally, his landscape painting for the Jefferson County Trails appears on most of the trail signs, and is also available as a poster. Regarding the City of Fairfield montage painting, he says: "Being asked by the website committee to execute a portrait of Fairfield, allowed me to focus on, and appreciate, the variety and diversity of elements we possess and are blessed with as a community. The juxtaposition of an agricultural base with our hi-tech companies, the many cultural and rectreational activities, the subtle splendors of our landscape, and the diversity of population all called to me for a place in the painting. The difficulty was not being able, in such a small space, to include all the aspects of Fairfield I have come to love and admire. It was a great joy to try and convey those feelings."
