Election & Voting Information
Election Information
Elections in Fairfield are held for a variety of reasons:
- Municipal, State, and Federal races
- Referendums on ballot issues
- School board races, bonding referendums, and levies
The members of the Fairfield City Council are elected by the voters of Fairfield and serve for four-year terms. The Mayor serves a two-year term. There are five Wards represented by one council member each, along with two at-large positions.
The Fairfield City Council serves to administer and enforce the rules, regulations, policies, and budgets affecting all Fairfield departments and operations.
The City of Fairfield elected to adopt a run-off election in lieu of the requirements for a primary election; meaning, no primary is held, but instead the winning candidate must received 50% plus one vote of total votes cast. The City election is held in odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November to elect City officers. A candidate must be an eligible elector in the City and City ward (if any) at the time of filing nomination papers and at the time of the election. For regulations, deadline calendar and frequently asked questions for the City election, please see the election page on the Secretary of State's website.
- If you are interested in running for council, please visit the Secretary of State's website, pick up papers from the Jefferson County Auditor's office or with the City Clerk at City Hall. The number of signatures required change with each election, please check in with one of these offices to verify that number.
